Abstrak

Translation is an important skill to master. For English language education students this skill is useful for communication and transferring the source language to the target language for communication, documents, or article abstract. The purpose of this study is to describe what strategies students use when translating English Article Abstract into Indonesian and to find out what obstacles students experience in the translation process. This research was conducted at a private university in Banjarmasin, using qualitative techniques, more precisely a case study research design. The study involved four students and one lecturer as participants. The data collection methods used in this section are documentation and in-depth interviews. The research result shows that in the process of translating, there are seven strategies that students use in translating English Article Abstract into Indonesian, namely Comprehensibility and Translatability, Calque, Modulation, Literal, Borrowing, Adaptation and Equivalence translation strategies. In translating certainly does not go smoothly, there are several obstacles experienced by students, these obstacles are limited knowledge in terms of right vocabulary and idioms that are difficult to understand the meaning, difficulty understanding scientific language, lack of understanding of the cultural language context and lack of interest in reading. The way they overcome them is by reading a lot discussing with friends and the help of a translation machine. For future researchers, this research can be further developed by using other instruments that can support the depth and detail of research with similar titles because this research only uses interviews and documentation instruments
